Petite, Small, Husky, Large

Twice a year I shop for my children. OK more than that but I actually devote time to their clothes twice a year for the season change. This year I noticed something that is a little disturbing. My son, who will be 8 this summer, is small. If he were a girl we would say petite but not the best word for a boy. Anyway, I have a difficult time finding shorts that fit his waist but don't make his legs look too skinny. Most of the clothing that I have bought for him this year is a size 6. On the other hand my daughter is big for her age. She will be 5 in a few weeks and I bought size 5 clothing only to return it because it did not fit. The point is that I am now buying size 6 for both my 8 year old son and my 5 year old daughter. I want this to be switched. I want my daughter to be petite and my son to be the one that is a little bigger only because I never want anyone to ever get picked on. Its funny because we never think about the size of our children until we have to buy them clothing. I know that all children go through stages and eventually my son will have growth spurt and my daughter will slow down but it is funny to me that they are wearing the same size clothing this summer. I will not mention it to them (my son would be devastated) but I guess she can borrow his shorts as needed.

That cartoon looks like me and my skinny-ass younger brother when we were growing up.

Don't girls grow sooner/faster than boys? I know I did! I was taller than my dad by 7th grade I think. Also, as one of 3 girls through middle school who were taller than 95% of the boys in our class, I definitely got some teasing.

Sometimes I wish I were shorter, but I also like being able to reach the tallest shelf! Like in Legally Blonde when the dorky guy in her law class comes by in the library and helps her get the book down while enjoying his sandwich, I find myself doing things like that a lot, and I kind of like being able to help people out who are...vertically challenged, shall we say.

Though I don't enjoy people assuming I can play basketball just from my height! I can't even do a layup, it's embarrassing.

No worries it will all even out!

Thanks DD for the mental image. And Polkadotoes as always thanks for the kind words. Dumb to be worried but as a parent ever little thing seems like a big thing.

I know what you mean. As soon as I became a mother, I felt guilty about all kinds of things and worried unnecessarily. Maybe it goes with the territory. :-) Looking back, I can tell you that most of what you worry about won't ever happen. :-)

btw ... I suggest you should try GapKids. I know most people don't think highly of them, but I was a kids and baby specialist for the 4 years I worked there. They have the adjustable waist in their clothes and they make a slim size in their kids line. they also do plus sizes in everything. They are one of the few stores that realize not all kids are average sized. Also, I believe Old Navy also has the adjustable waists as well.
