Don't ever, ever allow yourselves to be swayed by people who say "if you do this for me, I will be your best friend".
I heard a little girl saying this the other day and it made me laugh and also cringe. Never, ever feel that you have to do anything to make someone like you. I would like to think that my kids have the confidence to say "screw you, I don't want to be your best friend anyway " (OK maybe they will have a little more class than that).

In its simplest form, that statement is actually a bullying statement because it forces one person to submit to the will of the other.
It's kind of an "or else" statement.
Now, I realize that children may not know that, but I would hope their parents--like you have--would show their children how to speak and think and act for themselves.
I never thought of it as a bullying statement but I guess you are right. I just never want my children to feel like they are inferior to anyone...
